The Washington area is the nation’s top place for African-Americans to live and work, according to results of a survey sponsored by Black Enterprise magazine.
The survey takes into account how African-Americans fared in a number of categories, including median household income, percentage of households earning more than $100,000, businesses owned by African-Americans, unemployment rates and home ownership rates.
Included in the survey as part of D.C. were the suburbs in Maryland and Northern Virginia.
Survey respondents said D.C. had a robust job market and a wealth of cultural activities, according to news release issued Tuesday by Black Enterprise.
“The perception of the city has changed,” Mayor Adrian Fenty said in the release. “There’s a lot more business development.”
The District also ranked the highest for median home value of the cities surveyed, at $404,900. It had the lowest foreclosure rate as well, at 0.3 percent, as well as the lowest sales tax, which is 5.75 percent.
Survey respondents, however, were dissatisfied with the city’s public schools.
