Just in time for tax season, a D.C.-based nonprofit is getting a little help in helping low-income and middle-income families file their taxes.
Since 2002, the Children’s Defense Fund has worked with families in order to help them file their taxes and help them take advantage of tax credits.
Last year, the organization helped families get back $170 million.
“Our goal is to get as much hard-earned money as possible back in the hands of those who earned it, so that it is not lost to any predatory private companies,” CDF Press Secretary Nayyera Haq said.
This week, the nonprofit announced a $750,000 grant from the McLean-based Freddie Mac Foundation, which will help CHF open 130 new volunteer sites and file an additional 112,00 tax returns over the next three years.
Volunteer lawyers and accountants man the sites near tax season in order to help families that are filing, Haq said.
Freddie Mac previously invested around $1 million in CDF in previous years, spokeswoman Jennifer Meyer said.
