Research in Motion’s BlackBerry wireless e-mail service fell victim to a large service interruption starting Tuesday night.
In a city like Washington, where BlackBerrys are ubiquitous, a sustained outage might send some users into withdrawal. However, by Wednesday, most services had been restored.

“[The] root cause is currently under review,” said the company in a statement, “but service for most customers was restored overnight and [Research in Motion] is closely monitoring systems in order to maintain normal service levels.”
Worldwide, the company has more than 8 million subscribers. Last week, the company reported that more than one million new subscribers had signed up for the service in the first three months of 2007. District Mayor Adrian Fenty, an avid Blackberry user, said he realized after his morning run Wednesday that his three BlackBerries were out of service. They failed him for about an hour, he said.
“I was text messaging, text messaging,” Fenty said. “I’ll find a way to get through.”
