Clinton stands by Rahm Emanuel

Hillary Clinton defended Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Friday amid controversy over whether his government suppressed a video of the police shooting of an unarmed teen for more than a year while he weathered an intense re-election campaign.

“He loves Chicago and I’m confident that he’s going to do everything he can to get to the bottom of these issues and take whatever measures are necessary to remedy them,” Clinton said of Emanuel, with whom she worked during the first two years of the Obama administration, according to Bloomberg.

The release of the tape late last month sparked calls for Emanuel’s resignation and prompted the embattled mayor to dismiss his police chief.

Clinton has said she supports an independent review of the Chicago Police Department.

While the controversial killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald took place in Oct. 2014, the officer who shot him 16 times was not charged until the day the tape was released in November of this year.

Critics have accused Emanuel of delaying the tape’s release until after his political position was safe, a suggestion he denies.
