A Republican nonprofit supporting Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is spending up to $1.5 million on TV ads.
That would buck the trend for Republican groups this year, which have struggled this year to keep up with their Democratic counterparts.
The Kentucky Opportunity Coalition, a 501(c)4 advocacy group that is backing McConnell’s re-election, will spend $660,000 on a new 30-second ad attacking Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Democratic candidate. It will also spend $870,000 to air a positive ad that it has run before.
Both would be substantial buys in the Kentucky broadcast market.
As the Washington Examiner reported in July, Republican super PACs have struggled to bring in the same level of contributions as in 2010 and 2012, as wealthy contributors have worried about increased scrutiny.
