FBI head: Clinton investigation may finish after Democratic convention

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is taking its time to finish its investigation of Hillary Clinton, the bureau’s head said on Monday, and he doesn’t feel any pressure to wrap up before the Democratic Party’s nominating convention in July.

“The urgency is to do it well and promptly,” FBI Director James Comey said during an appearance with local law enforcement officials in Buffalo, New York. He added that “‘well’ comes first” and that he was staying “close to this one to make sure we have the resources to do it competently.”

Reports have indicated that the FBI is prepared to interview at least a dozen Clinton associates from the State Department, and an unknown number from the Clinton Foundation, in connection with her use of a private server as secretary of state. That process will likely conclude with an interview of Clinton herself.

After those interviews have ended, the FBI will issue a recommendation to the Justice Department of whether Clinton or any of her associates should be indicted. Clinton has repeatedly said that she doesn’t find that prospect worrisome, maintaining that the FBI is conducting a “security review.”

The State Department announced on Friday that it was suspending an internal review of Clinton’s practices until the FBI investigation concludes. If that agency waits until later in the year to finish its investigation, it presents a possibility that the State Department will not have an opportunity to resume its probe prior to a new president being sworn into office in January — who could very well be Clinton.
