Will Hurd to New Hampshire for GOP fundraiser, stoking 2024 speculation

Rep. Will Hurd is headed to New Hampshire to headline a fundraiser for a Republican state senator, an appearance sure to spark speculation about the retiring Texas congressman’s future political plans.

Hurd, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative who occasionally clashes with President Trump, is traveling to Exeter, New Hampshire, on Saturday, to keynote a fundraiser hosted by Chuck Morse, the Republican leader of the state Senate. An invitation to the event, obtained by the Washington Examiner, says it’s a fundraiser for state Sen. Ruth Ward. Tickets run from $100 to $1,000 a piece, the invitation says.

Hurd, 42, represents a competitive south Texas district with a predominantly Hispanic constituency, putting him at odds with Trump and Republican leaders in Congress on key issues like immigration. A member of the House Intelligence Committee at the center of the impeachment process, Hurd over the weekend broke with his Republican colleagues who have been calling for the identity of the whistleblower to be revealed.

House Democrats are investigating allegations that Trump abused his power in dealings with Ukraine. The accusations surfaced after a complaint was filed by a government whistleblower in the intelligence community. Hurd voted against a resolution formalizing the impeachment process.

Hurd is retiring next year after three terms. New Hampshire is host of the first primary, and second nominating contest, on the presidential primary calendar. In September Hurd said at the Texas Tribune Festival that he’s considering a 2024 Republican presidential bid.

“I will do what I have always done when I’ve had the opportunity to serve my country,” Hurd said in response to a question about a presidential run in the election after 2020. “I will think about it.”
