The head of Delaware’s Republican Party says most if not all of the state’s delegates going to the national convention will continue to support Donald Trump if more than one ballot is needed to pick a nominee.
“There is a level of confidence that on a second ballot or thereafter, that 15 of the 16 will continue with Mr. Trump, because in the end, it is the will of the people of the state of Delaware that must be carried on,” said Charlie Copeland, chairman of the Delaware GOP, according to a report Saturday.
Trump’s campaign expressed similar confidence.
“I have been told that we would very likely get 15 on the second ballot,” said Trump’s Delaware campaign chairman Rob Arlett. “We have confidence, at the Trump campaign, that they will follow through to represent the will of the people throughout the process in Cleveland.”
Last week, Trump won the state’s primary by earning over 60 percent of the vote.
The news will likely provide a bit of a cushion to Trump if a contested convention happens in July if because he failed to secure the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination. In recent weeks, Trump has said the GOP nomination process is “rigged,” as rival Ted Cruz has earned the support of delegates in several states who are unbound to the results of the states’ primaries and caucuses.
