Poll: Trump enters key stretch of race with sky-high unfavorables

Donald Trump heads into Wisconsin’s Republican presidential primary Tuesday with 60 percent of voters across the country viewing him unfavorably, a new poll shows.

The billionaire-turned-GOP front-runner, who upset several pro-choice and pro-life activists last week with his comments about punishing women who receive abortions, has suffered from tremendously low favorability ratings since the beginning of March.

According to the latest Morning Consult survey, Trump’s image isn’t improving. The New York businessman starts the month of April with 37 percent of voters having a positive impression of him, compared to 60 percent who do not. Fifty-one percent of voters viewed Trump unfavorably at the beginning of February, marking a rise of nearly 10 percentage points in two months.

In fact, Trump’s favorability rating reached a historic low last week when three consecutive polls found that 67 percent or more of U.S. voters currently have a negative view of the leading GOP candidate — the worst rating for any major political candidate in the last three decades.

But Trump isn’t the only GOP candidate entering the Badger State primary with a net-negative favorability rating. Fifty-two percent of respondents in the Morning Consult survey said they have a negative view of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, compared to 37 percent who view him positively.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich is the only Republican left in the race with an overall positive rating among voters: 38 percent view him favorably, 34 percent do not and a combined 29 percent of voters have no opinion or have never heard of him.

In addition to his historically low favorability ratings, Trump is also losing steam among Republican voters. He continues to lead his two opponents, but his overall support has declined 4 percentage points since voters were last surveyed in late March. Meanwhile, Kasich has gained 4 points but is still polling a distant third.

The survey of 2,004 registered voters was conducted April 1-3. Results contain a margin of error plus or minus 2 percentage points.
