Jeff Sessions, facing a close Senate runoff election in Alabama, hit back at President Trump after he called the former attorney general a “disaster.”
On Saturday, Trump tweeted out his disapproval for Sessions, who is facing former football coach Tommy Tuberville in the Republican runoff contest set for Tuesday, and encouraged people to vote for Tuberville.
“Big Senate Race in Alabama on Tuesday. Vote for @TTuberville, he is a winner who will never let you down. Jeff Sessions is a disaster who has let us all down. We don’t want him back in Washington!” Trump tweeted Saturday morning.
Sessions fired back at the president a couple of hours later.
“I’ve taken the road less travelled. Not sought fame or fortune. My honor and integrity are far more important than these juvenile insults. Your scandal ridden candidate is too cowardly to debate. As you know, Alabama does not take orders from Washington,” Sessions said.

Sessions served Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 1997 until he was chosen to be Trump’s first attorney general in 2017. Sessions left the post in November 2018 and has faced heavy criticism from the president about his decision to recuse himself from the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. election.
Whoever wins the Tuesday election will face Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat, in the 2020 general election. Jones’s seat is pegged by pollsters as being one of the most vulnerable ones of this election cycle.
