The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg tore into identity politics during a discussion about Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s plan to fill half her Cabinet with women if she wins the 2020 election.
“I’m going to fill my Cabinet full of women. Women, women, women, women, women,” co-host Meghan McCain said on the show’s Wednesday episode, mocking Warren for attempting to play up her gender in the race.
“I know you guys hate when I say this, but I really don’t like identity politics,” she continued.
“None of us like identity politics,” Goldberg responded.
Co-host Sunny Hostin cut in to disagree, saying she supported identity politics, but Goldberg was quick to fire back.
“This is how people say to you that you’re not smart enough to figure out who you want,” Goldberg replied to Hostin. “When they start saying, ‘Well, you voted for this person because they’re black,’ it says to me you don’t think I’m smart enough to have done my homework to find out if that’s the right person. You’re telling me I’m not smart enough to do what every American can do.”
She added, “It’s like being an African American. I’m an American.”
The comments came a day after Warren pledged to fill half of her Cabinet with “women and nonbinary people” if elected.
“Our government officials can best serve the American public when they reflect the diversity of the country itself,” the Massachusetts Democrat said Tuesday.
