Top Biden aide says confrontations with voters show he has ‘what Democrats want’

A top aide to Joe Biden’s White House campaign said his recent confrontation with an autoworker in Detroit is an example of what makes him appealing to Democratic voters.

“I think what Biden was saying there is, I’m not going to allow somebody to distort my record. I’m going to be crystal clear about where I stand,” Biden Deputy Campaign Manager Kate Bedingfield told Fox News Tuesday. “I think that that’s what voters are looking for. I think that’s what Democrats want.”

During a campaign event in Michigan hours earlier, an employee at an auto plant confronted the former vice president and accused him of “actively trying to end our Second Amendment right.”

“You’re full of shit,” he told the man. “I support the Second Amendment.”

Video of the interaction between went viral on social media, adding another incident to the list of similar confrontations Biden has had with voters on the campaign trail. In December, he called an Iowa voter “a damn liar” after the man referenced his son’s business dealings in Ukraine.

Bedingfield said President Trump has proven he will not hesitate to run a bruising campaign against whoever the Democratic nominee ends up being, so her candidate needs to rise to the occasion.

“[Trump’s strategy is] going to be largely built on misinformation and disinformation,” she said. “And I think what you saw from Biden in that exchange is that he’s not going to take that. And again, I think that’s what Democratic voters are looking for, a straight shooter who is going to be clear about where he stands and is not going to allow somebody to distort his record or misrepresent where he is.”

During a recent debate, the Delaware Democrat mistakenly claimed 150 million people have been killed by guns since 2007 and vowed to stand up to the gun lobby in Washington, D.C. He went on to notch key wins in primaries in Missouri and Michigan on Tuesday, taking a commanding lead in delegates ahead of this summer’s Democratic National Convention.
