Kellyanne Conway proposes a person of color as Trump’s running mate to help ‘lead an America First movement’

Kellyanne Conway, who served as a White House adviser to former President Donald Trump, suggested the Republican front-runner pick a person of color as his running mate.

In a New York Times op-ed published Monday, Conway rejected popular calls to pick a woman as his vice president, urging Trump not to play into identity politics. Instead, Conway listed Sens. Tim Scott (R-SC), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and others as options to join his 2024 ticket.

In suggesting Trump select a person of color as his running mate, Conway said it’s not for identity politics. She urged Trump not to follow calls to “pick a woman” like President Joe Biden did in choosing Vice President Kamala Harris, warning Biden and the nation “suffer daily the consequences of embracing identity politics.”

“Not for identity politics a la the Democrats, but as an equal helping to lead an America First movement that includes more union workers, independents, first-time voters, veterans, Hispanics, Asian Americans and African Americans,” Conway wrote.

Conway was one of Trump’s longest-serving aides, performing as his 2016 campaign manager and later acting as counselor to him until August 2020. She said that Trump’s vice president needs to be able to tackle key developments affecting the U.S. and help approach foreign policy.

“With a crisis on the border, economic dissatisfaction, fears about crime, a parents’ rights renaissance and multiple wars and threats across the globe, Mr. Trump’s deputy must be able to navigate chaos and challenges at home and abroad,” Conway wrote.

Recently, Trump was pressed on Fox’s Sunday Morning Futures about who he’ll pick to serve as his right-hand man or woman. If he beats former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley in becoming the Republican Party’s nominee, Trump floated Scott and Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) as contenders.
