‘Squad’ Democrat 22 points behind Democratic challenger: Poll

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) is far behind a challenger in the Democratic primary for her congressional seat, a new poll suggests.

A poll from Republican polling firm Remington Research Group, for the Missouri Scout, shows Bush trailing St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, 50% to 28%, in the Democratic primary. Another 4% said they favored state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, and 18% were undecided.

The survey comes weeks after Bush confirmed she is under investigation by the Department of Justice for alleged misuse of federal security money, which her office has said she is “fully cooperating” with. Prior to the investigation becoming public, her stance on the war between Israel and Hamas has caused uproar among some Democrats.

The Missouri Democrat has been vocally opposed to Israel, calling the country’s operation against Hamas an “ethnic cleansing” in October. Her and Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-MI) stances on the war could motivate a Democratic megadonor to fund challengers, a political adviser to one of those donors told CNBC in November.

Bush, a member of the “Squad” of progressive Democrats in the House of Representatives, was first elected in 2020 but could be endangered like another member of the Squad at risk of losing her seat — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).

Omar narrowly survived a challenge from Don Samuels in the Democratic primary in 2022 and is set to face him again in 2024. While rhetoric about police put her at risk in 2022, some members of the Squad could be at risk for their stances on the Israel-Hamas war.

Most Democratic politicians, including in the House of Representatives, have supported Israel in its war against Hamas, leaving the Squad as a vocal minority decrying the Jewish State.

The survey was conducted from Feb. 7-9 among 401 likely Democratic primary voters in the district and has a margin of error of 4.9%.
