Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) marketed progressive Democrats and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) as “normal” in contrast to the “creepy” ticket of former President Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).
In an Instagram livestream, Ocasio-Cortez reaffirmed her support for Walz, portraying Vice President Kamala Harris’s selection of him as a uniting moment. She contrasted the Harris-Walz ticket with that of Trump-Vance, which she portrayed as “weird” and “creepy.”
“And I think the two of them together really show what America is actually about and what our values actually are, and Trump and J.D. Vance are, like, the creepiest people you’ve ever met in your life,” she said. “Like, truly, I think, like, I mean, where do we even start with J.D. Vance? Like, he’s weirdly obsessed with women’s bodies and reproductive systems.”
In a line consistent with that of most Democrats but a departure from her standard progressive iconoclastic approach, the New York Democrat pitched the 2024 presidential ticket as a return to normalcy.
“They are creepily obsessed with LGBT people like nobody. I don’t think normal people are this concerned with what’s going on in other people’s situations, you know, like, kind of, keep your hands to yourself, right? They don’t know how to do that. And we’re here to kind of make things normal,” Ocasio-Cortez said of Trump and Vance.
Ocasio-Cortez was, however, quick to clarify that it was only a certain kind of normalcy, stressing the need for continuing “progress.”
“But not just normal. Actually to try to commit to a policy agenda that … ensures that we make progress, and I think that we really want to try to make that part of our conversation,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She portrayed her kind of politics as a true normalcy, arguing that the establishment Democrats were an aberration from the historic Democratic Party.
“Anyways, what I was going to say is that I am looking forward to a Democratic Party that is moving past the kind of ’90s-era triangulation politics and moving and getting back to our roots of being FDR Democrats, of being populist working-class labor Democrats, with the added integration of a modern intersectional lens,” Ocasio-Cortez said, “that is aware of racial rights, that is aware of women’s rights, that’s aware of and fights for civil and LGBT rights and integrates the material identity values, not just superficial.”

When reached for comment, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung directed the Washington Examiner to a statement from Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt, in which she said, “It’s no surprise that San Francisco Liberal Kamala Harris wants West Coast wannabe Tim Walz as her running-mate – Walz has spent his governorship trying to reshape Minnesota in the image of the Golden State.”
“While Walz pretends to support Americans in the Heartland, when the cameras are off, he believes that rural America is ‘mostly cows and rocks’. From proposing his own carbon-free agenda, to suggesting stricter emission standards for gas-powered cars, and embracing policies to allow convicted felons to vote, Walz is obsessed with spreading California’s dangerously liberal agenda far and wide,” she added. “If Walz won’t tell voters the truth, we will: just like Kamala Harris, Tim Walz is a dangerously liberal extremist, and the Harris-Walz California dream is every American’s nightmare.”
