Turnout tracker: Where ballots have been cast early in the 2024 elections

More than 43 million ballots have been cast nationwide in this year’s elections, even as candidates up and down the ballot work to still win over undecided voters.

Those statistics include in-person early votes and returned mail-in ballots, with north of 65 million ballots requested by mail.

The neck-and-neck race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is driving a high general election turnout, but control over Congress also hangs in the balance as House Republicans and Senate Democrats look to defend their respective majorities.

Here’s where early voting trends stood in battleground states as of Monday using data from state election offices, the University of Florida’s Election Lab, and the New York Times.

Nationwide

Only about half of states report party registration data for those who have cast early ballots, and far fewer report demographics, such as age, gender, and race.

Of the 21.5 million ballots in states reporting party affiliation, Democrats accounted for 40% of ballots, Republicans for 36.2%, and none or a minor party for 23.8%.

Of the 5.5 million ballots in states reporting age, 6.5% were 18-25 years old, 13.2% were 26-40, 37.4% were 41-65, and 42.9% were over 65.

About 54% of the 4.9 million ballots cast in states reporting gender were female, 44% were male, and 2% were unknown.

Only three states, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, report race and Hispanic ethnicity data for early votes. In the trio of states, 65.7% were white, 22.2% black, 2.2% Hispanic, 1.8% Asian American, 0.4% Native American, and 7.8% other or unknown.

Pennsylvania

About 1.3 million voters have cast early ballots in Pennsylvania. Democrats outweigh Republicans roughly 2 to 1, accounting for nearly 60% of early votes compared to about 30% from those registered with the GOP.

Voters over 65 account for 50.9%, those aged 41-65 were 30.8%, 26-40 were 12%, and 18-25 were 6.3%.

Georgia

Georgia’s early votes total 2.8 million. More than 44% were aged 41-65, 32.1% were over 65, 15.7% were 26-40, and 7.7% were 18-25. More than half, 55.4%, were female, with 43.9% male and 0.7% unknown.

Most voters, 59.2%, were white, compared to 26.2% black, 2.7% Hispanic, 2.6% Asian American, 0.5% Native American, and 9% other or unknown.

North Carolina

North Carolina has seen a little more than 2.8 million ballots cast, 33.3% of which were Democratic, 34.1% were Republican, and 32.6% were none or a minor party.

Those aged 41-65 accounted for the most with 41.9%, followed by 35.8% over 65, 14.8% for 26-40, and 7.5% for 18-25. Females were 51.9%, males 41.9%, and unknown 6.2%. More than 70% were white, 17.5% black, 2.3% Hispanic, 1.5% Asian American, 0.5% Native American, and 7.7% other or unknown.

Michigan

More than 1.65 million ballots have been cast in the Great Lakes State.

Women were 56.4%, males 43.3%, and 0.3% unknown. More than 56% were over 65, 30.2% were 41-65, 8.9% were 26-40, and 4.6% were 18-25.

Ohio

Just over 1.64 million ballots have been cast in Ohio. Of the 1.13 million requested mail-in ballots, about 729,000 were returned.

Nevada

Early votes in Nevada total around 644,000, including 34.7% Democratic, 39.7% Republican, and 25.5% none or a minor party.

Arizona

Total early votes in Arizona are just shy of 1.3 million. Democrats account for 35.1%, Republicans 41.9%, and 23% none or a minor party.

Wisconsin

Approximately 858,000 ballots have been cast in Wisconsin.
