Republican Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity launches campaign for governor

State Treasurer Stacy Garrity, who earned the most votes in a Pennsylvania state race ever in 2024, launched her Republican campaign for governor on Monday.

Garrity is challenging incumbent Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) for the state’s top job. She hinted on social media Sunday that she could run with a “Which Team Are You On?” tagline comparing Shapiro and former President Joe Biden to herself and President Donald Trump.

In her campaign launch video, Garrity touted her military experience, slammed Shapiro for ignoring Pennsylvania amid his presidential ambitions, and aligned herself with Trump.

“I’m going to make your family one more promise: I will never embarrass Pennsylvania with scandals, unconscionable behavior, deleted emails and cover-ups, and a total lack of transparency like Shapiro has,” she said in the video.

Garrity’s inclusion in the race comes as Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano is considering running for the Republican nomination in Pennsylvania again. Mastriano lost by double-digits to Shapiro in 2022 after Democrats in the state promoted his candidacy. Democrats accused him of having extreme beliefs and wanted Shapiro to run against him.

Shapiro has not said whether he will run for reelection. A strong showing in 2026 could help his 2028 presidential ambitions in a Democratic field that is far from being determined. He says he’s fixated on Pennsylvania, for now.

“I’m super focused on my work in Pennsylvania,” he told the New York Times in July. “I love doing that work. I think it is important to do that work, to deliver results.”

Garrity had a much stronger showing in 2024 than Mastriano did in 2022. She drew about 1.3 million more votes and beat her Democratic opponent by about 6 points. She looks to be the early favorite for the Republican nomination in one of the country’s top governor races.

The state treasurer currently faces little opposition for the GOP nomination, other than from Mastriano if he declares.

If elected, Garrity would be Pennsylvania’s first female governor.
