Mamdani’s Democratic Socialists of America Party bashes Gaza ceasefire

The Democratic Socialists of America bashed the Gaza peace deal, arguing that it didn’t properly punish Israel and favor the Palestinian cause.

The DSA boasts the allegiance of or support from several major left-wing politicians, including New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

While giving limited support to the agreement, saying it “acknowledges and welcomes the relief that may be afforded to Palestinians,” the DSA denounced most of the peace deal. It also characterized Palestinian militant groups, implicitly including Hamas, as the “Palestinian resistance.” The agreement marked the “end of this intensified stage of the genocide,” but not the genocide as a whole, the DSA argued.

“This will not end Israel’s assault on the Palestinian people or the theft and occupation of Palestinian lands. A conditional ceasefire agreement does not wash the hands of the ruling class that touted their legal obligation to intervene and instead, continued to fuel and arm genocide while stoking regional war,” it said.

The statement suggested that the agreement was sure to be violated quickly by Israel.

“Across the region, Israel terrorizes the people of Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Qatar, and Iran while wielding the implicit threat of nuclear engagement to violently impose its fascist, expansionist aspirations. The long sought after stability in the region is dependent on Israel and its allies finally being held accountable for their decades long list of war crimes and imperial aggression. Until then, there can be no long lasting peace,” the DSA said.

The DSA also appeared to call for Israel itself to dissolve, given that it views the whole state as a colonial project.

MAMDANI SAYS PROGRESSIVE WING WON BATTLE FOR ‘SOUL OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY’

“DSA stands for the full freedoms and self determination of the Palestinian people including the end of Israel’s colonization and occupation of all Arab lands, equality, and the right of all refugees to return to their homes and properties,” it said.

The rhetoric could further complicate Mamdani’s run as he seeks to soothe the concerns of Jewish voters. He has distanced himself from previous anti-Israel rhetoric.
