Doctor: Clinton has pneumonia, ‘recovering nicely’

Hillary Clinton has been diagnosed with pneumonia, according to her doctor, who issued a statement late Sunday after Clinton had to leave a 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York early.

Dr. Lisa Bardack said the Democratic presidential nominee was diagnosed Friday while being examined for a “prolonged cough,” which Bardack said was related to allergies.

“She was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and modify her schedule,” said Bardack, in a statement released by the Clinton campaign. “While at this morning’s event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now re-hydrated and recovering nicely.”

A Clinton spokesperson had initially said only that an episode Sunday morning, in which a wobbly Clinton appeared to stumble before being helped aboard a van, was because she got overheated.

Clinton went immediately to her daughter Chelsea’s Manhattan apartment, and was examined later in the afternoon by Bardack at her home in Chappaqua.

Clinton’s cough has dogged her on the campaign trail over the past week, nearly forcing her to delay a Labor Day address and prompting widespread speculation over whether she wasn’t disclosing an underlying health problem.

Clinton is due in California Monday and Tuesday for a series of fundraisers, but a senior aide said the trip is now in question as the campaign staff discusses whether she should travel.
