Crockett says claims she has a fake ‘street girl’ persona are racist

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) pushed back Tuesday against claims that she projects a fake “street girl” persona, calling the criticism racist while appearing on The View.

The remarks stem from comments made by Vice President JD Vance at a Turning Point USA event in December, where he told the audience, “The record speaks for itself. She wants to be a senator, though her street girl persona is about as real as her nails.”

After co-host Joy Behar played the clip and invited Crockett to respond, the Texas Democrat began with a pointed rebuttal.

“First of all, my nails are real,” Crockett said, drawing applause from the studio audience.

Crockett then argued that the criticism reflects Republican discomfort with her appeal to voters Democrats have struggled to retain, particularly those without college degrees.

“What a lot of people don’t understand … is that Republicans are a lot better at doing focus groups,” Crockett said, adding that internal and third-party polling shows strong support for her among voters without college degrees.

“Those that don’t have a college degree, by over 70%, choose me. That’s a demographic that we’ve been losing.”

She rejected the idea that her background or tone is manufactured, citing her legal career.

“The reality is that I was a criminal defense attorney. I was a public defender,” Crockett said. “I am somebody who walked into plenty of jails and dealt with real killers. So let me be clear, I understand what happens in the streets, but I don’t have to quote-unquote be a ‘street girl.’”

When Behar pressed her on whether Vance’s remark was racist, Crockett agreed.

“You know it’s racist. We know that,” Crockett said, as co-host Sunny Hostin echoed the assessment.

Crockett went on to argue that Republicans are attempting to divide minority voters by reshaping her public image.

“One of the things they’ve been trying to do for quite some time is to try to figure out, specifically within minority communities where I do well, is how do I divide minorities about who Jasmine is,” she said.

“Sometimes they say, ‘Oh, she’s so educated.’ And so they’re trying to get people that maybe don’t have as many degrees.”

Crockett, who recently launched a bid for the U.S. Senate in Texas, has become a frequent target of Republican attacks as her national profile has grown, particularly following repeated appearances on cable news and daytime television.
