Kris Kobach, former Kansas secretary of state and ally of former President Donald Trump, won the Republican nomination for state attorney general Tuesday, a comeback bid after losing a 2018 gubernatorial race.

The primary also included federal prosecutor Tony Mattivi and state Sen. Kellie Warren. Although Kobach has more name recognition in the state, Warren was supported by more Kansas Republican organizations.

Kobach gained a national profile as an immigration hard-liner due to strict regulations he implemented in the state, as a frequent guest on conservative talk radio, and as part of Trump’s so-called election integrity commission. But his failed gubernatorial bid, as well as a failed 2020 Republican primary bid against now-Sen. Roger Marshall, left questions about his viability as a candidate.

He embraced Trump’s baseless claims of a stolen election in 2020 and contended the same unproven fraud cost him his own reelection in 2020.

Kobach will go on to face Democratic candidate Chris Mann, an attorney and former police officer, in November.
