Trump guilty: DeSantis and former 2024 GOP rivals denounce felony conviction

Donald Trump‘s former GOP primary rivals excoriated Thursday’s unprecedented news of the former president being found guilty of all 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), perhaps Trump’s toughest 2024 rival, was the first of the former Republican presidential candidates to weigh in and denounce the verdict.

“It is often said that no one is above the law, but it is also true that no one is below the law,” DeSantis posted in a lengthy statement on X, just minutes after the verdict was announced. “If the defendant were not Donald Trump, this case would never have been brought, the judge would have never issued similar rulings, and the jury would have never returned a guilty verdict.”

Vivek Ramaswamy slammed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as “a politician who promised to nail Trump” on X.

Ramaswamy then moved on to attack Judge Juan Merchan and his daughter, Loren, whom Trump had previously attacked. “The judge’s daughter is a Democrat operative who literally *raised $$ from the trial* while her father presided over it,” he continued. “This will backfire.”

Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), a potential running mate for Trump, called the verdict “a travesty of justice.”

“The judge was a Biden donor. The prosecutors were Biden supporters,” Burgum, who has appeared at court in support Trump, continued on X. “This Lawfare should scare every American. The American people will have their say in November.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), another rumored Trump running mate and campaign surrogate, filmed a selfie-style video blasting the entire trial.

“I can’t believe the hoax. The sham. This absolute injustice justice system. DA Bragg and the judge should be ashamed of themselves,” Scott says in the video. “This isn’t just ridiculous. This actually erodes the confidence that Americans have in the justice system.”

The South Carolina senator has long been singled out by Trump as a top vice presidential pick and has consistently slammed Trump’s legal drama as election interference, which he reiterated again on Thursday.

“Joe Biden’s two-tier injustice system weaponizing the justice system of the United States of America against a political opponent. Un-American,” Scott also said. “Joe Biden, you’re fired. We the people stand with Donald Trump.”

Other rivals, such as former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, took a more cautious approach to Trump’s conviction.

“It is not easy to see a former President and the presumptive GOP nominee convicted of felony crimes; but the jury verdict should be respected,” he posted. “An appeal is in order but let’s not diminish the significance of this verdict.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, two of Trump’s biggest detractors, have not yet weighed in on the verdict.
