“Tragically, the shooter claimed the life of one of our fellow Americans, Corey Comperatore, unbelievable person, everybody tells me,” Trump said. “He was incredible. He was a highly respected former fire chief.”

Trump recalled Comperatore throwing himself on top of his family to protect them from the gunshots.

“He lost his life selflessly acting as a human shield to protect them from flying bullets,” Trump said. “He went right over the top of them and was hit. What a fine man he was.”

Trump approached Comperatore’s gear, embraced it, and kissed his helmet. He then asked for everyone to pay respect to Comperatore with a moment of silence.
