Democratic candidate Eileen Higgins will become the next mayor of Miami after winning Tuesday’s runoff election.
Higgins, whose victory broke the Democratic Party’s 28-year dry spell in seeking the Miami mayor’s office, will succeed Republican incumbent Francis Suarez. From 2001 to 2009, an independent, Manny Diaz, controlled the mayorship. After Diaz’s term, he went on to lead the state’s Democratic Party.
