A high school in Fairplay, Colorado, will receive a one-button security system Friday to connect them with law enforcement in case of emergency.
Security company Convergint selected South Park High School to receive its emergency button system at no cost. Instead, donations the company has received will enable it to install $100,000 of security measures for free. It is the first school in Colorado to receive the system.
After Friday, the school will be equipped with an “ASR Alert” system that includes stationary and mobile buttons to contact local authorities regarding active shooter situations, medical incidents, and severe weather. Should the active shooter button be pressed, a strobe and siren will be activated in an attempt to disorientate the gunman.

On average, an active shooter event lasts 13.5 minutes, and police respond to the event in 18 minutes on average, according to the ASR Alert website. The buttons are an innovation to shorten response time.
“Specifically for Park County, we saw an opportunity to help bridge the communication gap between the school district and law enforcement,” Convergint’s senior account executive, Chad Ferguson, said. “And that was a strategic initiative for the school district and the law enforcement. So it was a really easy decision for us to pick them.”
Ferguson was confident that South Park wouldn’t be the last Colorado school to receive it.
“Local police departments and the local sheriff have been very receptive of this program,” Ferguson said. “They’ve worked with us to ensure that everything is in place ahead of the installation. And I think they’re looking at deploying this in other locations as well.”
Nationwide, there are 42 schools equipped with ASR Alert buttons as a gift from Convergint’s Step Up program. Other schools are also welcome to apply.

Convergint closed its offices for one day in 2021 to send a team to two other schools in the Denver area, King-Murphy Elementary School and Bennett School, to replace their fire alarms and install cameras free of charge. Every year, they repeat a similar project in a different area.
