House passes resolution condemning hate crimes against Asian Americans

The House Wednesday passed a resolution condemning hate crimes against Asian Americans, a day after approving an Asian American hate crimes measure President Joe Biden will sign into law by Thursday.

Wednesday’s 244-180 vote passed a resolution “condemning the horrific shootings in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 16, 2021, and reaffirming the House of Representative’s commitment to combating hate, bigotry, and violence against the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community.”

HOUSE EXPECTED TO PASS HATE CRIMES BILL FOCUSED ON ANTI-ASIAN SENTIMENTS

Republicans opposed the measure, in part because they believe it was narrowly focused on crimes related to COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the House cleared a Senate-passed bill that would create a position at the Justice Department tasked with investigating and expediting the review of crimes that are related to COVID-19.

Democrats drafted that bill to combat hate crimes that appeared to be directed at Asian Americans in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biden is expected to sign that measure into law by Thursday.

Wednesday’s measure was sponsored by Rep. Judy Chu, a California Democrat and chairwoman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.

Democrats crafted both measures following the March 16 shooting at an Atlanta spa that killed eight people, including six women of Asian descent.
