Two killed in Beltway hit-and-run
Two people were killed late Tuesday night on the Capital Beltway when an allegedly drunken driver slammed their car from behind with her sport utility vehicle just before crossing the American Legion Bridge into Virginia, police said.

Virginia State Police said they caught up to the SUV driver. Police say she had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the limit at which drivers are considered drunk. Neither her name nor the names of those killed were immediately released.
State employee fined, fired for passport peeking
A U.S. State Department employee was fined $500 for illegally snooping into the passport files of celebrities and politicians. Gerald Lueders, 65, of Woodbridge, peeked into the records of more than 50 famous people and friends, prosecutors said. The investigation began in March 2008 after authorities found several contractors and employees of the State Department had illegally accessed the files for presidential candidates. Lueders, who was fired over the incident, worked for more than 30 years at the State Department.
Three suspects nabbed in armed robberies
Montgomery County police arrested three suspects in connection with two armed robberies in Silver Spring. Arrested were Randy A. Powell, 25, of Montgomery Village, and Joseph Powell, 29, and Jamahl Mitchell, 25, both of White Oak. On July 2, police said, the men tried to force a man into their car and get him to withdraw money from an automated teller machine, but the victim escaped. Minutes later, suspects matching their description robbed a man at an ATM at a Chevy Chase Bank at 13311 New Hampshire Ave., police said.
Md. alcohol confiscation jumps in ’09
Stepped-up enforcement efforts resulted in Maryland authorities seizing $141,709 in untaxed alcohol in the fiscal year ending in June, double the amount taken during the same period a year earlier, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot said Wednesday. The state seized 1,150 gallons of liquor, 137 gallons of wine and 44,300 beer containers, Franchot said. The state also confiscated 172,715 packs of untaxed cigarettes valued at $853,220.
