John Hinckley, the man who tried to assassinate President Reagan 30 years ago, will get to spend more time with his mother.
U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman approved the extra visits from the psychiatric hospital to visit his mother’s house in Williamsburg, Va. In 2009, Friedman allowed Hinckley to apply for a driver’s license and increase his length of visits to his mother’s home from six nights at a time to nine.
His visits to his mother’s home are generally supervised, although he is periodically granted unaccompanied time in a prearranged location.
Hinckley, 55, has been housed at St. Elizabeths Hospital since he was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 1981. Hinckley said he shot Reagan and three others at the Washington Hilton in an effort to impress actress Jodie Foster.
