Shots were fired at the Pentagon on Tuesday, causing a temporary lockdown. No one was injured.
Gunshots were reported at about 5 a.m. Officials said an unoccupied part of the building that was being renovated was hit.
Two bullets were found lodged in windows.
No arrests were made.
The facility was briefly on lockdown. Part of Interstate 395 near the Defense Department headquarters was also temporarily closed while police investigated.
Authorities said they believed the shooting was random, but were exploring whether the incident was connected to the weekend discovery of bullet holes in windows at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va.
In March, a gunman who fired shots as he neared a Pentagon security checkpoint was shot and killed by police.
