Woman killed in Columbia Heights fire

A woman was killed Friday evening in a fire at a Northwest D.C. apartment building.

D.C. fire officials said the blaze happened at 1309 Columbia Road NW in Columbia Heights at about 6:30 p.m. Firefighters found an adult woman unconscious and not breathing in a first-floor apartment.

The woman was suffering second- and third-degree burns to the “majority” of her body, fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said. He said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but appears to be accidental and possibly caused by smoking.
