On this day, May 6, in 1966, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were sentenced to life in prison for murdering five children between the ages of 10 and 17 in Greater Manchester, England. The case became known as the “Moor murders,” because two of the bodies were found in makeshift graves dug at the Saddleworth Moor. At least four of the victims were found to be sexually assaulted by Brady and Hindley. The couple was arrested on Oct. 7, 1965. During the investigation, police found pornographic pictures of some of the children and tape recordings of them pleading for help. The case sparked a media sensation, with the press describing Hindley as “the most evil woman in Britain.”
