Man released after 20 years in prison for murder identical twin committed

A Chicago man was released Wednesday after spending 20 years in prison for a murder his identical twin committed.

Kevin Dugar had spent almost two decades imprisoned in Chicago’s Cook County jail after he was convicted of a gang-related murder in 2003, according to Fox 32.

Ten years later, his twin, Karl Smith, wrote to his brother and confessed to being the true murderer.

“I have to get it off my chest before it kills me,” Smith wrote in 2013. “So I’ll just come clean and pray you can forgive me.”

Dugar sought a retrial, but the request was denied in 2018 after a judge questioned the credibility of Smith’s confession, according to the report.

That decision was reversed in an appeals court when Dugar’s attorney, Ron Safer, posited that a jury with the new information would reach a different verdict, the report noted.

Although prosecutors allege that Smith’s confession only came to light while he was serving a 99-year prison sentence for a shooting, Dugar was granted a 90-day conditional release.

“This case is in a very different situation than it was 20 years ago,” Safer said.
