One arrest, crowd remains at P.G. mall after canceled sneaker release

One person was arrested and about 200 people remained around The Mall at Prince George’s hours after the release of designer sneakers was canceled, officials said.

The Nike Foamposite Galaxy shoes were supposed to be released at the mall Friday morning. Hyattsville police spokesman Sgt. Chris Purvis said the shoes were being sold for around $220, but people will sell them online for much more.

The event was canceled for security reasons overnight, but some people still stuck around in hopes that the sneakers would still be sold, Purvis said.

One person was arrested for disorderly conduct, Purvis said.

At one point there were an estimated 1,000 people in the area of the mall, Prince George’s County spokeswoman Julie Parker said. At around 9 a.m. Friday, about 200 people remained in the area.

Media outlets in Florida are reporting that police had to break up an unruly crowd waiting to buy the sneakers at an Orlando mall.
