‘Untouchable’ Ness dies

On this day, May 16, 1957, Eliot Ness, the leader of a legendary team of law enforcement agents nicknamed “The Untouchables,” died of a heart attack. He was 54.

Ness was best remembered for his successful investigation of Chicago gangster and bootlegger Al Capone.

Ness selected a team of incorruptible agents, created an extensive wire-tapping operation and began raids against illegal breweries. Capone unsuccessfully tried to bribe Ness’ agents, leading to the nickname, “The Untouchables.” A number of assassination attempts on Ness failed, but one close friend was killed.

After his death, his book, “The Untouchables,” was made into a hit TV series, starring Robert Stack. Later, the same story was made into a movie with Kevin Costner playing Ness.
