Police researched Anne Arundel county exec’s opponents

Newly released documents show that Anne Arundel County police officers researched County Executive John Leopold’s political rivals.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which requested the documents, said the files show that officers and county staff members were gathering information similar to that which political campaigns collect about opponents. Leopold was indicted earlier this month on charges of misconduct in office for allegedly misusing his security detail. He allegedly had the police keep dossiers about his opponents.

The ACLU said the documents contained information about Leopold’s 2010 election opponent Joanna Conti, former Anne Arundel Councilman Thomas Redmond and Carl Snowden, director of the Office of Civil Rights in the state Attorney General’s Office.
