Man arrested in shooting of transgender woman

D.C. police arrested a 20-year-old D.C. man in the shooting of a transgender woman in Southeast Washington.

Darryl Willard Jr. surrendered to police on Tuesday and was charged with assault with intent to kill while armed.

Police said Willard and the woman were driving in the 2300 block of Savannah Avenue SE, arond 1:30 a.m. Monday, when Willard demanded that the woman perform oral sex on him. The woman refused and Willard got of of the vehicle, pulled out a handgun and shot the woman in the neck.

The woman drove to a nearby police station and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said the bullet traveled downward, striking the right and left lungs before lodging in the woman’s heart. She was treated and released.

Police did not respond Tuesday afternoon to a request for further information on the shooting.

Remains found in Woodbridge identified

Prince William County police have identified the remains found behind a Woodbridge store earlier this year as a man who was reported missing in February.

Police said the remains are those of 42-year-old Johnny Lankford.

No foul play is suspected in his death, police said, and the remains had no obvious signs of trauma.

A human skull was found in the woods behind a Kmart in May.

Teen sentenced in taped attack on transgender woman

A 19-year-old woman has been sentenced to prison for her role in the beating of a transgender woman at a Maryland McDonald’s restaurant.

Teonna Brown was sentenced in Baltimore County Circuit Court to serve five years in prison. The Baltimore Sun reports that Brown apologized in court for the April attack at the Rosedale McDonald’s, which gained national attention after video from the incident was posted online.

“My mother didn’t raise me like this,” Brown said, according to the Sun. “I would really like to apologize to the victim.”

In the April 18 beating, Brown and another girl repeatedly kicked and punched a 22-year-old transgender woman in the head.
