Three killed Sunday in Baltimore; bloody start for 2009

In the first four days of January, seven people were killed in Baltimore, including three homicides Sunday night — marking a bloody start to the new year.

Police found a teenage boy and an unidentified female shot inside an apartment building in Northeast Baltimore at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Trevane Ricks, 16, and the female were found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 5600 block of Loch Raven Boulevard in the Woodbourne Heights neighborhood. Ricks, who lived in the neighborhood, died three hours later at Johns Hopkins Hospital, police said. The female, who was not unidentified, also died shortly thereafter.

Less than three hours after the pair was found, homicide detectives were working on a second case.

A 20-year-old man was found lying in the middle of the street in the 4000 block of Chesmont Avenue at 10:20 p.m. Lougene Williams was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Police have no suspects and know of no motive for any of the killings.

The deaths bring Baltimore’s 2009 homicide total to seven, compared with two the same time last year.

The other homicides this year include the shooting of a 17-year-old male in the 800 block of North Kenwood Avenue on Jan. 2 and a double homicide in the 1100 block of Orleans Street that same day. Less than an hour after Baltimore rang in the new year, a man was shot to death in the 700 block of North Luzerne Avenue.

Last year, the city saw a major reduction in homicides, bringing murders to their lowest total in 20 years: 234.
