Faux bomb found near Andrews AFB

Maryland state police closed a two-mile stretch of road to investigate a suspicious package near Andrews Air Force Base.

The package was found on Branch Avenue at Coventry Way in Clinton by a state highway worker around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. The package had a cell phone attached to it and was made to look like an improvised explosive device, authorities said.

Bomb squad members used a remote device to explode the package. Authorities said they do not believe the package was a threat.

Police: U.Va. student slipped from roof in fatal fall

Authorities say a University of Virginia freshman slipped on a wet roof and fell to his death from a university physics building.

The school identified the student as Thomas W. Gilliam IV. He was declared dead at a hospital early Monday.

The university’s police department said Gilliam fell 40 feet after losing his footing while walking on the roof of the physics building late Sunday night. Officials called Gilliam’s death a “tragic accident” and said they have ruled out suicide and foul play.
