MontCo teacher to face trial in student assaults

A Montgomery County teacher is expected to face trial on charges that she punched, kicked and choked her first-grade students. The trial for 36-year-old Susan Lee Burke is scheduled to begin Monday in Montgomery County Circuit Court.

The 6- and 7-year-old students reported that the incidents took place during school hours.

The trial is expected to last five days, said Seth Zucker, spokesman for the county State’s Attorney’s Office.

Burke taught at Greencastle Elementary School in Silver Spring. She was arrested in February.

A grand jury in May indicted her on two counts of second-degree child abuse and 10 counts of second-degree assault. The indictment names nine students who were allegedly assaulted.
