Burned Md. firefighters in stable condition
Two Bladensburg volunteer firefighters injured during a Riverdale blaze Friday remain in critical but stable condition.
Ethan Sorrell, who sustained burns to his airway and can only communicate by writing notes, is dependent on an apparatus to breathe. Doctors will determine Monday when to remove the apparatus to diagnose the full extent of his injuries.
Kevin O’Toole suffered burns to 40 percent of his body and will soon undergo skin grafts. O’Toole faces six weeks in the burn unit at Washington Hospital Center and six months of intensive therapy.
Five other firefighters were treated and released for injuries sustained while attempting to extinguish the flames.
Vehicle hit by stray bullets
A man driving in the District was in the wrong place at the wrong time Sunday morning, police said.
He was traveling in a 1999 Dodge Durango on the 1900 block of H Street NE in D.C. at about 1:54 a.m. when he heard multiple gun shots. At that point, the man realized his SUV was hit by several of the shots.
The man was unharmed. No arrests were made and a description of the shooter is not available.
Fire destroys two-story Chillum home
The Prince George’s County Fire Department battled flames for 40 minutes Sunday morning at a two-story home on the 8000 block of 18th Avenue in Chillum.
Units arrived on the scene at 3:45 a.m. with fire showing from the back of the building, possibly starting on a deck before making its way inside the house. At one point firefighters were forced out of the building as the blaze burned through the roof of the home; they instead knocked down the bulk of the fire from the exterior.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The occupants displaced by the fire were assisted by the county’s citizen services unit.
Damage to the home and its contents were valued at about $150,000.
