Crime History: Parachuter sentenced for drop into World Series

On this day, Dec. 19, in 1986, Michael Sergio was sentenced for parachuting into Game 6 of the World Series between the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox. On Oct. 25, Sergio dropped in on New York’s Shea Stadium with a “Go Mets” banner during a game made famous thanks to a grounder that squirted between Sox first baseman Bill Buckner’s legs.

Prosecutors claimed that Sergio’s actions could have injured fans and players and interrupted air traffic.

Sergio, 37, was sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

Sergio was later held in contempt for refusing to reveal the name of the pilot of the plane he jumped from. He was sentenced to six months in jail, but Sen. Al D’Amato intervened and Sergio was released.
