Gaithersburg Police Chief John King has resigned from his post, citing a desire to work in the private sector.

King, who has been in his position since 2007 after a career with the Montgomery County Police Department, will be replaced on a temporary basis by Maryland State Police Maj. Mark Sroka.

City Manager Angel Jones said that she asked the state police to conduct an “assessment” of the police department earlier this year to review the entire department, including potential ways to cut costs.

She said she asked the state police to head the department while she searches for King’s replacement so that no current Gaithersburg police officers would have an unfair advantage in seeking the top post.

The Examiner first reported that federal authorities sent a subpoena to Jones in 2008 seeking employment records related to King’s disability pension with the county. Federal prosecutors never charged King with any wrongdoing.
