Md. woman, 72, killed by own vanA 72-year-old Western Maryland woman was killed when she was run over by her own van.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says Mary Lou Knotts left her van in reverse when she got out of the vehicle. She tried to stop the vehicle from hitting her by pushing on the van’s rear, but was run over.

She was pinned under the van and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

American U worker sentenced

for stealing $400k from school

A former American University employee was sentenced to a year in prison for stealing $400,000 from the law school.

Martine Tavakoli, 50, of McLean, a coordinator of journals at the Law Review, deposited checks made out to the school into her own bank account, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said she opened a secret bank account in the joint name of the university in care of herself.

From 2003 to 2009, she deposited hundreds of thousands of dollars into her account and used the money to pay for her rent, credit card bills and other personal expenses.

Man ID’d as shooter in trooper slaying

A detective said in court that Cyril Williams shot and killed an off-duty Maryland state trooper at an Applebee’s restaurant in June.

Williams has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Trooper Wesley Brown. Anthony Milton II is facing the same charge in the case.

Detective Kenneth Doyle said at a preliminary hearing that Milton told authorities that Williams waited outside and shot at Brown as he left the restaurant. Police had not previously specified who pulled the trigger.
