Son suspected in missing woman’s slaying

The death of a Russian woman who disappeared while visiting relatives in Maryland has been ruled a homicide, and authorities say her son is suspected in the slaying. Baltimore County police said a medical examiner has determined that 54-year-old Yulia Pogrebenko was killed. Her son, Dmitry Pronin, is believed to be involved in the death, but he has not been charged, police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said.

Pogrebenko arrived in the United States Feb. 23. She rented a car to visit Pronin in the Catonsville, Md., area, but was not heard from after that day.

Police said her body was recovered in the Chesapeake Bay in June.

Pronin is serving a 10-year federal prison sentence for a Delaware bank heist that occurred about a week after Pogrebenko arrived in the country, court records show.
