Virginia woman’s disappearance gets national attention

The case of a retired Army sergeant from Virginia who vanished in 2009 is entering the national spotlight.

The TV One show “Find Our Missing” will highlight Hattie Brown’s disappearance on its Wednesday episode. Brown was last seen with her nephew at a Sheetz outside South Boston in Halifax County on May 16, 2009, according to Virginia State Police.

That July, her Volkswagen Jetta was found abandoned and burned at a Halifax farm, but Brown has never been located. Authorities have called her nephew a person of interest in the disappearance, but no charges have been filed.

“In my heart, I don’t feel like she is alive anymore, but there is still that glimpse of hope,” Brown’s brother, Randy Brown, told the Lynchburg News and Advance in 2010.

Last year, her family plastered a 15-foot tall billboard on Route 58 in southern Virginia in an effort to generate tips. The family is offering a $20,000 reward.

Brown’s isn’t the first case from the D.C. region to be featured on “Find Our Missing.” The show profiled Environmental Protection Agency analyst Pamela Butler in January, and will feature missing District woman Unique Harris later this year.

Brown is described as black, 5 feet 4 inches tall and 155 pounds, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. She has shoulder-length black hair, brown eyes and a scar on her abdomen.
