On this day, June 30, in 1980, McGruff the Crime Dog was born.
The beloved spokesdog of the National Crime Prevention Council has been taking a bite out of crime for 31 years, teaching millions of citizens how to keep safe and reduce crime.
Recently, he has been campaigning against cyber-bullying, identity theft, gangs, and vacant property crimes caused by foreclosures.
Sometimes the job gets dangerous. In 2009, a Metrobus driver in D.C. got out of his bus, adjusted his mirrors and then punched McGruff in the face because he thought it would be funny.
