Crime History – Liquid bombers thwarted

On this day, Aug. 10, in 2006, British authorities prevented a terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives on 10 flights between the United Kingdom and the United States, including to Washington Dulles International Airport.

The plot’s discovery led officials immediately to ban all liquids from flights. Many restrictions remain in place today.

About 25 suspects were arrested, although only eight men were charged in connection with the plot.

The bombers planned to use peroxide-based explosives that are sensitive to heat, shock and friction. The plan was for an attacker to carry the explosive liquid inside a soft drink bottle and then mix it with other chemicals once on board the plane to build the bomb.

Three of the eight charged were found guilty of conspiracy to murder.
