Charter Spectrum will pay the family of Betty Thomas, 83, over $1 billion per a court ruling after a cable technician robbed and stabbed Thomas to death in her home in 2019.
Originally, the cable company was ordered to pay $7 billion to the Thomas family for gross negligence, but the family’s legal team told Fox News that the new amount will make an appeal less likely. Now, Charter Spectrum must pay $1.147 billion.

Cable technician Roy Holden was charged with capital murder in December 2019. He pleaded guilty in 2021 and is serving life in prison.
Holden had made a service call the day prior to the murder, returning in his Charter Spectrum uniform and driving a Charter van to rob and stab Thomas to death the next day while off-duty, jurors found. He then took Thomas’s credit card and made several transactions, officials said.
Dallas County Judge Juan Renteria stated in his ruling that Charter “knowingly and intentionally” committed forgery with the intent to harm.
Despite Holden not having a criminal history, the court determined that the cable company ignored countless red flags on Holden’s application, including failing to verify his employment history, which turned out to be falsified.
The court also stated that the company forged a service in an attempt to throw the lawsuit into arbitration, which would bring the damages down to less than $200 and keep it out of the public eye.

Representatives for Charter Spectrum previously said they “strongly disagree” with the $7 billion payout and that Thomas’s death “rests solely with Mr. Holden, who was not on duty” at the time of Thomas’s death.
