Colorado Springs nightclub shooting suspect to be held without bond

The suspect in the shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado, will be held without bond, a judge ruled in a brief virtual court appearance.

Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, who identifies as nonbinary, was charged with five counts of first-degree murder after deliberation and five counts of bias-motivated crime causing bodily injury after the shooter allegedly entered an LGBT club in Colorado Springs with an AR-style rifle and began shooting.

Aldrich allegedly killed five and injured multiple others, with some reports varying between 17 and 25 people.

Defense lawyers refer to the shooter as “Mx. Aldrich” in court documents and wrote that Aldrich identifies as nonbinary, using they/them pronouns.

The shooter appeared virtually before 4th Judicial District Judge Charlotte Ankeny on Wednesday. Reports from the hearing showed Aldrich wearing a sleeveless protective jail smock and appeared lethargic with the suspect’s head tilted to the right, per NBC News.

in addition to the bond order, Ankeny ordered prosecutors to share sealed arrest warrant material with Aldrich’s defense attorneys.

Aldrich was barely audible when Ankeny asked Aldrich to identify the defendant. The shooter was released from the hospital and taken to jail on Tuesday after being treated for injuries sustained when an Army veteran disarmed Aldrich with the help of another person and held Aldrich until police arrived.
