Police search for veteran’s ashes
U.S. Park Police continue to search for a stolen urn containing the ashes of a decorated U.S. Army veteran. Police said the urn was stolen from a car parked at the National Mall. The urn contained the ashes of 83-year-old retired Army Col. Norbert Otto Schmidt of Florida. The urn was described as bronze with a cross on the lower right front.
Corrections officers won’t be
prosecuted for K-9 fondling
The five Virginia correctional officers charged in October with animal cruelty for fondling a K-9 dog and videotaping the incidents will not be prosecuted. Powhatan County prosecutors said the charges would not stand up in court. The officers were training to become K-9 handlers in Goochland County. Two of the officers no longer work for the corrections department, and three others were removed from the canine program.

Jurors filled with questions in Dixon trial
Jurors in Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon’s theft trial continued to send questions even after they were dismissed for the day. After jurors sent a question and a note Thursday afternoon asking to end deliberations for the day, Judge Dennis Sweeney dismissed them. The judge and attorneys then began discussing the question but were interrupted by another question. A courtroom buzzer sounded again indicating another question, prompting Sweeney to call them back in. Sweeney told jurors they had to stop deliberating for the day and the best thing they could do was “go away.”
Pedestrian identified in fatal crash
Montgomery County police have identified the pedestrian who was killed Wednesday night in Silver Spring as 63-year-old William Alexander Guy. Police said Guy was attempting to cross 16th Street just north of Colesville Road when he was struck by a black 2002 Mercedes-Benz. Police are still investigating.
